The club behind the sauna
Os Turnforening is a non-profit sports club in Bjørnafjorden. The club owns and runs Os Sauna on a voluntary basis, and every krone of the surplus goes to sport for children and young people in Os.
How it started
In the summer of 2023, Bjørnafjorden municipality held a competition for a sauna at Steinneset. Os Turnforening won with a vision of a low-threshold, affordable and architecturally notable sauna, built with local labour and local materials. The first session was held on 21 October 2023.
Run by volunteers
There is no host in the sauna and nobody on the payroll. Volunteers from the club restock firewood, look after the building and answer emails. You lighting the stove and tidying up after yourself is what keeps the price down.
Where the money goes
In 2025 the income from the sauna went, among other things, to the new clubhouse and changing rooms at Kuventræ, and to the club inclusion fund, which makes sure nobody is left out of sport for financial reasons.
At the mouth of the harbour
The position at the far end of Os harbour is demanding. In the autumn of 2025, storm Amy tore at the moorings and forced us to close. Shortly afterwards the whole mooring arrangement was overhauled, and the sauna is now more securely fastened than ever.
